The Birth of Dr. T. Thanbyah Christian Institute

In the era of knowledge and information technology, a nation’s literacy rate often determines its level of development. A high literacy rate means a high potential for development. A low literacy rate means a lesser potential for development. In order to develop our nation, what we need most is education. On May 23, 2014, with the guidance of KNLA’s Vice Chief of Staff, who is also a member of KNU Central Executive Committee, a group of Karen education enthusiasts met in Maesariang, Thailand, where they discussed and analyzed our people’s current situation. In response to the need of Karen people, the decision to establish Dr. T Thanbyah Christian Institute was unanimously reached.

About the Name

Dr. T Thanbyah is a Karen leader and also known as one of the foremost Karen educators. He studied and earned his Doctor of Divinity degree in the United States. Our name is in honor of his academic achievement as a foremost Karen educator and his exemplary zeal for the all-round development of his people.

A Christian Institute

The foundation of TCI is based on Christian faith and values. However, TCI will accept and work with Karens from all walks of life and backgrounds, regardless of their creed – Buddhist, Muslim, Animist, etc. – and ethnic affiliation – Pwo, Sqaw, etc. As a Christian institute, we believe in the following:

The existence of TCI is rooted in and made possible by the strength of our living Lord, His strength and His blessing.

We can do all things because Jesus Christ strengthens us.

The historical existence of Karen people is made possible by the greatness of our Lord.

It is important that we pass along our testimonies, ministry and preaching to our new generation.

It is our duty to fulfill the calls of Karen golden chronicle.

Academic Programs

TCI plans to offer three distinct academic programs:

1) English

2) Information Technology; and,

3) Business Administration.

The duration of the program is approximately three years – six academic semesters. Students who successfully complete the program at TCI will be awarded Associate Degree in Arts or Science.

Aim & Objective

The main objective of TCI is to provide high quality educational and training opportunities that are compatible to changing circumstances and needs of the country. Through its academic programs, TCI will prepare its students for the challenges of the 21st century and empowers them to meet the demand of a rapidly changing world.

The TCI is dedicated to providing faculty, staff, and students with the environment and infrastructure that help them develop potential for scholarship, creative work, professional realization, and service to the society at large.

Towards achieving the goals, the TCI will cultivate in its students:

• The ability to think critically and tolerate differences of opinion,
